Parliaments of the European Union.  Between 2010 and 2016 Nico Bick photographed the 28 European Union member states and the two European Parliaments in Brussels and Strasbourg. Standing on the floor of the plenary chamber — a place commonly not accessible to the public — he made detailed photographs from a precisely selected position that enables the viewer to examine carefully all the important functions of the room: a (fixed) seat for each member of parliament, the press and public gallery, the place for the representatives of the government and a central place for the chairman of the parliament.
Through this work, he shows that although these parliaments may seem uniform, they are certainly not purely functional spaces. In the architecture, furniture, ornamentation, colour scheme and illumination they each reflect national specificities in their own way. Parliaments of the European Union is not a simple comparison, but an examination of the existing similarities and differences between the plenary chambers of the parliaments of the European Union member states and their national democratic processes.
